Medieval history is filled with territorial disputes and power struggles, but one of the most unusual wars ever recorded was fought over a wooden bucket. The War of the Oaken Bucket, waged in 1325 between the rival Italian city-states of Modena and Bologna, is a testament to how even the most mundane objects can become powerful symbols.
The Political Rivalry Behind the War
At the heart of this conflict was the ongoing struggle between the Guelphs and the Ghibellines—two factions that divided much of medieval Italy. Bologna, a staunch Guelph stronghold, supported the Pope, while Modena, aligned with the Ghibellines, sided with the Holy Roman Emperor. These tensions had led to skirmishes for years, but in 1325, the rivalry took an unexpected turn.
The Infamous Wooden Bucket
Legend has it that Modenese soldiers raided Bologna and, during their looting, stole an oaken bucket from a public well. Whether the bucket itself was the true cause of the war remains debated—many historians argue it was merely a symbolic act amid ongoing hostilities. However, Bologna was outraged and demanded the bucket's return. Modena refused, and war was declared.
The Battle of Zappolino
On November 15, 1325, Bologna assembled a massive army of 32,000 men, including 2,000 cavalry, to march against Modena’s much smaller force of 7,000 soldiers. Despite being outnumbered nearly five to one, the Modenese forces were highly trained and strategically positioned.
The battle was short but brutal, with an estimated 2,000 casualties. Against all odds, Modena secured a decisive victory, forcing Bologna’s troops into retreat. To further humiliate their rivals, Modena staged a mock parade through Bologna’s territory, flaunting their spoils—including the stolen wooden bucket.
The Fate of the Bucket
Rather than return it, Modena enshrined the bucket as a war trophy. Today, the bucket is still preserved in Modena’s Palazzo Comunale, where it remains on display as a quirky yet historic artifact. Bologna never reclaimed it, and the war became a legendary tale of medieval absurdity.
